President Bola Ahmed Tinubu:
Economic Reforms
Explore what changed, why, and what remains to be consolidated.
Ending the fuel subsidy
The subsidy consumed enormous public funds while benefiting just a few and excluding the majority. Subsidy removal was announced at inauguration and money once spent on subsidy now funds roads, health, education and transfers.
Unifying the exchange rate
Multiple exchange rates fuelled arbitrage and discouraged investment. Market-reflective foreign exchange reforms were introduced resulting in improved external reserves. Sustained stability and stronger protection for small businesses are evident.
Tax reform
Four tax bills were signed on 26 June 2025, effective 1 January 2026. They are intended to simplify the system, widen the base and relieve low-income earners. The new laws took effect only this year 2026. A full cycle is needed to judge their effect.
Crude-for-Naira and local refining
Domestic refiners, including the Dangote Refinery, can buy crude and supply refined products in naira, reducing pressure on foreign exchange.
Improved FAAC Allocations to Federal, State and Local Governments
Improved collection through Nigerian Revenue Service and a wider tax base results in improved FAAC Allocations enabling sub-nationals to deliver on projects and programs.
Ended Ways and Means creation, rescuing the economy from its damaging effects.
The reforms have shown positive results on the economy, however, they come at a price; and finishing the work is how that price pays off.
Arterial Highway Projects
Connecting geopolitical zones with concrete superhighways and inter-state corridors.

LAGOS-CALABAR COASTAL HIGHWAY
A Dream of decades, now under construction with the 750 km super highway from Victoria Island, Lagos through Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom to Cross River
The idea of a coastal highway has existed for decades. Earlier governments shelved it because of cost and complexity. This administration began construction. A completed corridor is meant to cut travel times, open up coastal communities, link ports and industrial zones, and create jobs along its length. Per-kilometre cost compares favourably with several inherited roads. Tolling is planned to recover construction costs.

SOKOTO - BADAGRY SUPER HIGHWAY
The highway which 1,068 km long starts at Illela in Sokoto State on the Nigeria-Niger border, passes through Kebbi, Niger and Kwara States, and ends at Badagry in Lagos State. It also crosses Oyo and Ogun States. It is a flagship project of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

LAGOS-IBADAN EXPRESSWAY
The expressway is Nigeria’s busiest inter-state route and a major trade corridor. It is the busiest inter-state route in Africa, runs 127 km and links Lagos with the South-West hinterland and the North.

ABUJA – KADUNA - KANO HIGHWAY
The highway is a 750 km dual-carriageway linking the FCT with Niger, Kaduna and Kano States. It is split into three sections: Section 1 (Abuja to Kaduna), Section 2 (Kaduna to Zaria) and Section 3 (Zaria to Kano), all of which have been completed.

AKWANGA – JOS - BAUCHI – GOMBE – BIU - MAIDUGURI HIGHWAY
The Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Biu-Maiduguri Highway is a 700-km, six-lane concrete highway (continuously reinforced concrete pavement). It is designated the Fourth Legacy Project and links five North-Central and North-East states. The five sections are: Akwanga-Kaduna-Jos (125 km), Jos-Bauchi (135 km), Bauchi-Gombe (162 km), Gombe-Biu (125 km) and Biu-Maiduguri (188 km).
Empowerment Programmes
Delivering education loans, consumer credit, enterprise guarantees, and clean CNG transition.
Nigerian Education Loans Fund (NELFUND)
Created the Nigerian Education Loans Fund (NELFUND) to grant loans to students of tertiary institutions; with hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries so far.
Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation
Created the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation to grant consumer loans to Nigerians enabling many to own their own cars, electronics and other consumables without having to cough out the entire purchase prices.
Nigeria Credit Guaranty Company
Created the Nigeria Credit Guaranty Company to support small and medium scale businesses with single-digit loans for their businesses.
Presidential CNG Program
Created the Presidential CNG Program to provide a cheaper and environmentally-friendly fuel for vehicles in Nigeria, in line with the global energy transition
